If you happen to find yourself driving across the great state of Texas and you’re looking for a romantic diversion, San Antonio just might have what you need. One of the most notable locations for a romantic date resides in an area known as The River Walk.
The River Walk, also known as Paseo del Rio, is a scenic path of walkways that follow the San Antonio River through downtown San Antonio. Your first thought might be one of a dirt path that follows a drainage ditch through the sewers of a big city, but rest assured, this is a romantic destination worthy of a scheduled diversion.
We recommend you arrive in the early afternoon and begin with a quick stroll through the Alamo Mission. If history is your thing, there’s plenty of it here. Your first thought might one of “that’s it? This is just a small building”, but rest assured, there’s more. Once you stroll through the mission, you can exit out a small door to the left for some additional destinations such as a gift shop, courtyard and the Crossroads of History. Some visitors will stroll through this landmark in about fifteen minutes while history buffs could feasibly spend a couple hours soaking it all in.
Once you are satisfied with your bucket list visit to The Alamo, a quick jump across the street appropriately named “Alamo Street” will take you to The River Walk. There are a number of bars, shops and restaurants accessible via a concrete pedestrian street on both sides of the river. We recommend you rest your feet a bit by taking one of the River Walk Cruise boats to see the sights and get some history from one of the local guides. This tour is about 1.5 miles long and takes roughly 25-35 minutes, depending on boat traffic and how chatty your tour guide is. Ask some questions and get to know your guide. You can learn quite a bit from these wonderful people and your feet will thank you for the break! There are packages available that combine a River Walk Cruise with a double-decker bus tour through the city, but we elected to take the boat tour followed with dinner by the water.
For those that want a little more, head on over to the Tower of the Americas for a scenic birds eye view and a romantic dinner at the top-floor Chart House Restaurant. The 750 foot tower was built in 1968 as part of the World’s Fair and remains a favorite destination for visitors near and far. If you merely want a budget friendly visit, you can skip the restaurant and purchase tickets to the observation deck and the Skies Over Texas 4D ride. Either way you will be able to knock the tower off your bucket list, even if it wasn’t there!
There’s plenty more to see and do if you are in the San Antonio area, but we think this is a good way to check out some sites, make some memories and break up that long 880 mile trek across I-10 in Texas, if you so happen to be going that way. If you indeed make a stop at The Alamo or The River Walk, send us a Bunny Up Photo and we’ll send you a free gift!
